SERIE: LES PORTRAITS AUX CHEVEUX BLEUS
The works from ‘Serie: Les Portraits Aux Cheveux Bleus’ are an amalgamation of real and imaginary figuration rooted in a holistic mindset & a curiosity for eastern cultures likely stemming from a childhood gift of a geisha doll from my Uncle who had been stationed in Okinawa.
Inspired by photo series featuring 'the women with blue hair' this body of work has evolved into a statement about finding a zen meditative space, meant to empower women, highlighting the beauty in imperfections.
In what could be seen as shapeshifting the concept of the face as a mask exploring the self as a mirror of reflection or polarization of figures in and out of space, in and out of past or present, body or mind emphasize how they resonate invoking an ethereal quality. Leaving space for the viewer’s interpretation of what the paintings bring out, which is unique to each individual.
As the body of work progresses you can see an emphasis on textures…for instance in ‘Je Pleure Pour La Planete' there is a textured ‘marbled’ backdrop offering sparse symbolism, and the gestural form encompassing it is seemingly ethereal yet laden in hope despite an underlying sadness.
Imperfections unfold as textures & multi-layering abstract painting techniques figure prominently in the transformation of the ‘big blue marble’ seen as the ‘backdrop’ to this piece but could be the forefront, generating significance through motion evoking ethereal qualities .
These works speak to the fragile nature of our existence in the face of hurried detrimental decisions effecting all facets of life in a somewhat perilous quest…for what? So much at stake. At a new breaking point where uncharted globalization and technological advancements are the tipping points.
Rather than feeling overwhelmed maybe it’s time to dial it back…reflect, lean into our communities, our environment & work together where we can make a difference. Small incremental steps towards big change.
