YOU’RE BEING DELETED
You’re Being Deleted is a series of figurative works that came to be initially as an underground Apocalyptic / Dystopian Series that took shape and were inspired by a visit to a Jasper Johns exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. One of my takeaways from the exhibit was how prominent coinage was in a portions of his work. I immediately began thinking of how we as a society utilize cash and how the blockchain and cryptocurrencies are factoring in to the big picture. The work then started evolving as we as a society started seeing immense advancements in AI and robotics that have been steadily outpacing our human abilities in many areas. Whether that has you feeling dubious or conversely widely adapting to alternate realities, there are mixed feelings somewhat strange and suspect; like a wolf at the door.
While my punk and apocalyptic series of 'underground' portraiture have deep parallels, this series is exploring cutting edge of technological advances and themes and elements of steampunk are intentionally juxtaposed with a counterpoint; initially luxe...adding elements of collage integrating textures into the painting process; deconstruction and layering add interest through shredded, torn and painted denominations or rich textures to reflect on social and economic inequalities, & the reality of the surround.
The more recent work is using the same techniques but to exacerbate the stripping away of our human qualities. As the body of work is progressing, it is noteable the 'You are Being Deleted' works have a blurred quality as many of our abilities as humans ‘advance’ simultaneously many of our capabilities are actually being stripped away and we are left to decipher what is reality vs. what is conjured. The vivacity of colors and the vibrant forces of contrasts or lack thereof set a tone. These works are an invitation to grasp on to the signs of the times noticing the small but important signs around us and reflecting on the thought developed.
Evolving yet again into a new body of work is based on refraction; distortion, light and textures.
